What is the origin of drones? One cannot simply answer this question, since drones come in many froms. Essentially, a drone is an unmanned vehicle which can be controlled by humans. Although people are still sceptical regarding the use of drones, drones are able to contribute heavily to todays society. One of the main reasons UAVs have become so popular is the fact that dangerous manoeuvres or jobs can now be completed without risking a human life. Before the drone era, a human life could be used to complete dangerous, but necessary jobs. For example, pipeline inspections would require someone to climb high in a pipeline tower to perform an inspection. This would not only be risky, but this would also require a large amount of time. Using drones to complete this job has changed the game. Now, a UAV can be controlled to fly to the area which has to be inspected, and do the job. A drone is able to do this job in a fraction of the time and money it would cost a human to complete. Military UAV usage

As mentioned before, UAVs can greatly limit the amount of humans lifes risked to complete tasks. Therefore, drones are already being used for a long time in the military. Also, remotely-controlled vehicles offer many strategic advantages. An example is how drones can map out an enemy military site. On the basis of this information a thoughtful strategy can be formed to approach the enemy site.

One of the first functional drone bomb carriers is the Ketterling Bug. A collaboration between Charles Ketterling and  Elmer Sperry resulted in the Ketterling Bug. The Ketterling Bug was a computerized, auto-piloted biplane to bomb directly toward a pre-determined target. Although the Ketterling Bug had its first successful flight in 1918, it has never actually been used in combat. This decision was partly made because officials were concerned of possible failures before reaching enemy territory. This did not mean that the production of the Ketterling Bug was in vain. A lot was learned from this project, and the Ketterling Bug is considered the forerunner of the modern military UAV.

The first plausible working UAV is the Predator RQ-1, manufactured by General Atomics. This drone has been put in service since 1994. The Predator RQ-1 is able to fly 400 nautical miles and stay airborne for 14 hours straight. Up to today, unmanned combat aerial vehicles (UCAVs) have completed up to several thousands of missions.
